Next Coworkout location: Fort Mifflin

On the way back from the passport agency in Philadelphia, I stopped by Fort Mifflin, the Revolutionary-war fort used continuously by the US Army from 1771 to 1952. It was the garrison at Fort Mifflin that held the British Navy back(!!!) so that the Continental Army could make it to winter quarters at Valley Forge.

It’s a beautiful spot, right on the Delaware river, with big, rusty, interesting freighters going by, and big, interesting airplanes landing overhead. It’s grassy and serene (except for the airplanes), with open, sunny spots, breezy spots on top of grassy banks, and sheltered spots behind them.

AND, for a reasonable donation, they’ll let you fire the cannon. What more could a coworking location possibly offer?

Here’s a picture I took earlier today. Just imagine how beautiful this’ll be when the trees bud! Also, here are some Flickr photos of Fort Mifflin that other folks have taken.

Fort Mifflin: East Gate

Possible drawbacks of Fort Mifflin:

  • No espresso machine within a 2-mile radius. We’ll bring coffee in jugs, and possibly get delivery from Essington nearby.
  • The planes landing overhead are fun to watch, but the radar in the nosecone may mess with our EvDO data signals. Not sure yet.
  • It’s very very haunted.

I had a nice conversation with Lee Anderson, the director of Fort Mifflin, and he’s happy to have us come out and work. So: the next time the Sandex cracks 90%, we’re totally holding Coworkout at Fort Mifflin. See you there!

  1. I hope I can get a new job that allows telecommuting before the Sandex hits 90% so I can attend this coworkout.

  2. While important during the Revolutionary War, it had a more nefarious use during the Civil War. ‘A Rev. Dr. Handy was arrested for calling the Union flag an “emblem of oppression”. He refused to take an oath of allegiance and was imprisoned for 15 months. Several members of the Delaware legislature were briefly imprisoned.’ http://bit.ly/2PwCWY

Plenty of injustice done her to motivate the continual haunting.
